Agent Vinod Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site: IBNLive (CNN IBN)

For a large portion of Agent Vinod, you don’t know where things are going…and then it all stretches on so needlessly that you stop caring. Given that this is a film that sees itself as a desi-style Bond, it has glaring loopholes that are embarrassing. The action in the film is choreographed slickly, but you can’t help feeling a tad let down. In these days of visceral fight scenes and breathless chases that you’re accustomed to seeing in the Bourne, Bond, and Mission Impossible movies, the rapid editing of the action sequences here never allows you to take in the repercussions of the violence. What cripples the film even further is its uneven pacing.I’m going with two out of five for Agent Vinod. He’s a spy who knows how to save the day; he just needs a better plan.

One expects AGENT VINOD to be an elegantly defined story with an exquisitely structured screenplay  with some unanticipated betrayals, sensational locations, slick action but with the absence of gadgets. If that's precisely the way you are looking at AGENT VINOD unleashing before your eyes, you've got it right. Contrasting the spy movies made in Bollywood, this one's truly bona fide and swanks of a pertinent plotline. An ambitious script, set in various countries, AGENT VINOD is by far the most credible secret agent movie made in Bollywood. This hi-octane thriller has style and substance, both! On the whole, AGENT VINOD is a hi-octane espionage thriller with a heart. It is not just brawny and dynamic, but witty and crazy too. Ultra slick and stylish, this desi Bond movie adheres to the formula and succeeds in meeting the humungous expectations. AGENT VINOD has all the potential to develop into a triumphant franchise!

What’s Good: The action sequences; the stylized cinematography; the snappy editing. What’s Bad: The ordinary story; the unnecessarily confusing script; the lack of an emotional connection between the audience and the protagonist; the absence of chemistry between Saif and Kareena’s characters; the laughable climax.Verdict: Agent Vinod is a bold experiment gone wrong; certainly not something that entertains in its entirety.Watch it only if you want to see an Indian spy movie. But be warned that it comes nowhere closer to the Bond or the Bourne series of Hollywood films.

If only Agent Vinod were a video game. It has all the hallmarks of a classicSo yes, as a game it'd be sensational, and tremendous fun. As a film, on the other hand, Agent Vinod must be termed a disappointment, a slick and well-produced throwback to the spy thriller that feels both overlong and under-conceived. Agent Vinod wants to be funny, and while there is the occasional burst of wit, it's exhaustingly rare. Agent Vinod may be the best looking actioner we've seen, and Sriram Raghavan may be a unanimous choice to hold the joystick, but watching him play this particular game shows him distracted by the window dressing -- and not trying hard enough to save the princess.

Agent Vinod is also attempting to be too many things - a slick thriller to match Hollywood but also a cheeky homage to cheesy Bollywood movies. So the film has gloss and fast-paced action but the villains are a throwback to the 1980s - after all, how seriously can you take Gulshan Grover in a white suit or Prem Chopra with a ponytail or Shahbaz Khan with one glass eye?.The result is that Agent Vinod never becomes more than the sum of its parts and even though it picks up speed in the second half, it leaves you both exhausted and unsatisfied. But I enjoyed the character of Agent Vinod. If he does get a sequel, I hope he has a better narrative to romp in.

Agent Vinod is not quite the overwhelming experience that you would want a global espionage thriller to be. More thoughtful than thundering, more la Carre and less Bond it nonetheless take the spy genre in Hindi to a new level of finesse. Finally, the cool quotient in Raghavan's chic spin on the espionage thriller is so high that you forget Bond and all his bloody brothers.

Despite miraculous leaps in production values, spy thrillers in Bollywood end up looking like Chinese equivalents of western products. And here, the characters are even stereotyped to the extent of detectives wearing trench coats and moles being obvious, shifty-eyed and literally uncomfortable in their own skin. So let’s just say foreign locales, weapons to annihilate the world, designer suits and not-so-excruciating interrogations don’t cumulatively justify ‘Agent Vinod’ as a thrilling movie-watching experience.

The first 40 minutes of the film are intriguing and simultaneously confusing. It is bifurcated into sub-plots, which add adventure to the story. But, the flip side is that some sequences look completely illogical.Brilliant performances, dialogues, cinematography and innovative screenplay are the strengths. A slightly confusing direction, misleading music at some points with no relevance to the theme are the weak points. On the whole, Agent Vinod is not a flawless venture, but if you are hungry for experimental cinema, this is the movie to die for.

Agent Vinod had massive potential though. Some dialogues sparkle, and the film is slicker than most Bollywood films that claim to be stylish action thrillers.Sriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod is brilliant in bits, and incredibly asinine in others. It’s probably the most inconsistently good film I’ve watched lately, and a massive letdown. Which is a pity. It could have made for a rare, looked-forward-to franchise.

All of that is acceptable as long as the intended espionage thriller has an inventive storyline. But after a world tour across half a dozen countries, the film culminates with a traditional climax where the Indian capital faces a nuclear-threat. The time bomb has to be detected, decoded and deactivated. The film starts with an interesting prologue in Afghanistan and ends with a witty epilogue in London. How we wish the globetrotting in between was as much compelling. The film is entertaining but not in entirety. Agent Vinod gets the nod though not whole-heartedly!

'Agent Vinod’ starts on a promising note in Afghanistan where a Vinod is trapped by at a Lashkar hideout. He along with his team member Rajan Gandhi (Ravi Kissen) find a way out of it with bullet firing and bombings. The movie has traces of the Bond series, Raghavan’s ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Dus’ and Mani Shankars’ ’16 December’. The film has a few moments that are really good and you want them to stay but the graph isn’t stable and has its ups and downs. The film also had a number of loopholes, with unexplained situations, wasted actors and so on. Plus points: Few camera angles, a few dialogues, Saif and Bebo’s chemistry and ofcourse, Ram Kapoor (you can practically watch the movie for him)

  2. The most unique and creative TIC tee I have seenBuy Proton Mail accounts in a while. My Boxer has been wearing them ever since he was a pup and now is older and ready to take on the competition with a T-shirt that says: Most Unique Tecnic I Learn. It makes me laugh when I see his run-up to the dog crate and out there with his shirt off. He usually does this about three times, then goes back into his crate to snooze for about five or six hours before going to sleep. If you have a dog who loves to exercise and is always ready to play, then this tee would be a good choice for him.
